DIY Facial Mist/Essence

I have always been experimenting with a lot with skincare products in order to find the right ingredients that are beneficial for my skin type, which is dry and sensitive.  From high-end beauty products to fairly affordable ones, I regularly keep myself updated with what are popular in the market and give notes to the products that work well on my skin type.  I will share a post on my regularly skincare routine in the near future!
My skin is extremely sensitive and I always seem to face problems like blemishes, dry patches, and uneven skin texture.  After researching for the ingredient list that helps moisturizing my ultra-dry skin, I have finally made this DIY facial mist, also can be used as an essence after toner.  This mist definitely brings noticeable results to my skin in just a week.  This DIY facial mist is also inspired by my current favorite liquid lotion - "Gokujyun Lotion" by a Japanese beauty brand Hada Labo.  What I like most about this lotion is that it contains Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid, which are miracles for dry and sensitive skin like mine.  Glycerin, or glycerol, and Hyaluronic Acid are two popular humectant ingredients that help keeping your skin hydrated and locking the moisture onto your skin outermost barrier.

Now I feel like it is time to reveal my secret for dewy and healthy skin!  So this DIY facial mist only contains three basic ingredients: Aloe Vera Juice (or Rosewater), Vegetable Glycerin, and Oil of your choice.

First, get your empty spray bottle ready!  Any type of spray bottle will do.  I choose the small one, about 50ml, so that I can carry it everywhere and spray on my face when I feel dry.  Also, before using any new bottles, I suggest you clean your empty bottle with water, and then sanitize it gently with rubbing alcohol.  I use alcohol wipes to clean my spray bottle.  Rubbing alcohol evaporates very quickly, so you do not have to wait for a long time until the bottle becomes completely dry.

When your empty bottle is ready, it is time to pure in the Aloe Vera Juice and fill up about 85-90% of the bottle.  Aloe Vera is a cactus plant that only grows in dry weather conditions, like in Africa or India.  For the tiny plant itself to grow healthily in such dry climates, it must be able to hold so much moisture in order to stay cool and hydrated.  So Aloe Vera is well-known for its magic to moisturize your skin as well as to give rich nutrients to your body.

The other ingredient that I use for this DIY facial mist is Vegetable Glycerin, which is also found in the Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion and other moisturizers.  Glycerin is a natural compound that composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.  And Vegetable Glycerin is often derived from soybean, coconut or palm oil.  This ingredient is an emollient, in which gives your skin a smooth and moist texture.  It also does not have any smell or color at all.  It is clear, colorless, and odorless.  Vegetable Glycerin helps preventing skin dehydration and retaining the natural moistures of your skin.

The last ingredient is oil, you can choose any suitable oils for your skin type, whether you have oily, combination, or dry skin.  If you have dry skin like me, jojoba oil, argan oi, and avocado are absolutely great for healing dry patches and soothing your skin surface.  If you have oily skin type, grapeseed oil, maracuja oil, and tea tree oil are great options.  Grapeseed oil are full of vitamin C and other antioxidants that help enhance and brighten your skin complexion.  While tea tree oil is an amazing cure for acne-proned skin.  And if you have normal to combination skin, I think any oil will do, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc. are all there for you to choose.  But in my opinion, most plant oils help nourishing and rebuilding the skin lipid barrier.  So adding a little bit of oil into this DIY mist is a must.  As I have said before, I have dry and sensitive skin, so I use argan oil and jojoba oil for my facial mist.

And you're done!  Shake the mist well before you use to evenly incorporate the oil with the rest of the ingredients.  You can use it right after toning your skin.  And after spraying this mist/essence, follow up with the rest of your skincare steps (serum, moisturizer, sunscreen or sleeping mask).

As I have mentioned in my previous Natural Beauty Products post, I have been trying to use more natural ingredients in my daily skincare.  So this post is another natural beauty product that you can create based on your skin type.  I have been using my DIY facial mist for almost two months now, and my skin has been absolutely healthy and dewy as of late!  I want to experiment and have fun with skincare once in a while.  Beauty does not have to be boring and expensive, it can be creative and affordable.  I hope you find this post somewhat helpful, and hope it gives you good information to find what is good for your skin type!
HAPPY MAY to you!

NOTE: Please remember to carefully store the mist in a fridge or at a cool temperature. This DIY mist contains water-based ingredients, therefore, it is crucial to make a small batch at a time and use it within a week.  Water-based ingredients will grow mold and bacteria over time without proper preservatives; however, the aloe vera juice I use has some preservatives so it helps to keep the mist fresh for a while.

    1. Thank you, Moon Maiden for your lovely comment! I am glad that you find the post helpful. I am always on the hunt for natural beauty remedies because I have very sensitive skin. You're right, witch hazel is absolutely great to treat acne-prone and dry skin! Have you tried the K-beauty "7 skin method" that was recently devised? I think it might help to hydrate the dry skin type like yours and mine. Hope that you'll soon find the most effective skincare routine and good luck on the journey to nourish your skin!

    1. Hi,
Since this is a mist (water-based solution), I suggest using either aloe vera juice or rose water as the main water base. Just remember to make a small batch at a time that can be used within a few days or up to a week - also please remember to store them in the fridge or at a cool temperature! Water-based ingredients will grow mold and bacteria over time without proper preservatives. But the aloe vera juice that I use has some preservatives in it so this helps to keep the DIY mist fresh for a while.
Hope that this answer helps and good luck!

  4. Hi Thao
Can you give me percentage amounts of the ingredients? You said 85 to 90 percent of the liquid is aloe vera, but for the other ingredients, I am not sure how much, and in what percentage to add. Thanks.

    1. Hi Mai Fiori,
In this solution, I normally use about 10% of Vegetable Glycerin and then about 5% of Oil. The type and amount of oil totally depend on your skin type so feel free to experiment with the ratio!
      Good luck :)
